Nothing else on an entrance does as much work in a picture: the colour separates the people walking on it from everything behind them, which is why press and phone cameras both find it. That cuts both ways. Premieres and screenings
The walk-in shot is the whole point of the run, so it wants the 6 ft width and it wants to reach the kerb rather than stopping politely at the door.
Awards nights and galas
From the drop-off to the ballroom doors, with posts down both edges. Guests arrive over a period of an hour and the carpet is what keeps that hour looking like one arrival.

Down a school corridor or across a hall floor. It marks the route families take to their seats and gives the walk up to the stage a defined edge that a floor alone does not have.
