A pale runner is the one people look at closely.
White holds the eye at floor level in a way the darker colours do not, so the things that matter about it are the things nobody thinks about until the morning of: where the walk starts, whether the edges are straight and what is going to be walked across it before the guests arrive. Lay it last. A run that goes down at the same time as the chairs spends four hours under the crew that is setting up the room.

Wedding aisles
The straight line through a floor of chairs. Beyond the look, it holds the aisle at one width — chair rows drift over a long set-up and the edge of a runner is what they get straightened against.
Ceremony under a tent
On grass or on a tent floor, where a pale run separates the walk from a surface that photographs as one flat colour.
Pale ballrooms and stone lobbies
Cream marble, light parquet, a limestone floor. White marks the route without introducing a second colour to a room somebody has already finished decorating.
Product launches on a white set
Where the whole build is white and the floor has to disappear into it, so the object on the plinth is the only thing with a colour.

The usual add-on
Posts to keep the aisle at one width.
An aisle without posts is an aisle that has moved by the time the guests sit down. A rope line along both edges holds the width you set and keeps chairs from creeping into the walk during the set-up. Gold suits a warm room, chrome a cool one — the white runner takes either.
