Black, but not black all over.
The tube is black and the fittings are not: the ball on top, the collar beneath it and the ring where the tube meets the base are all gold. That trim is what decides the rope it takes: gold caps, because a silver cap against gold hardware is the one pairing that reads as an accident. It is also what puts this post in warm rooms rather than cool ones — against brass, timber or a low-lit foyer the gold picks up what is already there, where in a hall of glass it is the only warm thing in the frame.
