Colour is the fastest instruction there is. A red belt on the accredited lane beside black on general entry sorts a crowd before anyone reads a sign.

Around a vehicle on a plinth or a case of product, a red line carries the meaning a black one leaves to a steward to explain.

Red reads as stop from across a room, which is why it ends up over the gaps nobody should walk through. What it cannot say is why the gap is closed or where the open one is.
