For the sign that is already a board — a seating chart, a welcome panel, a framed sponsor credit.

Specifications

It opens in one motion and there is nothing to lose.

One movement takes it from flat to standing and it locks there, with no wing nuts and nothing to leave behind in the grass. Two clips carry the board and sliding them is the adjustment most people miss, because the easel’s own height is fixed. The limit is 5 lb.

Where a board needs holding up

Six places an easel earns its floor space.

  • A room entrance

The seating chart or the running order, at the threshold, where a guest reads it once and moves on. It is the classic position and the reason is that nobody has to stop walking to use it.

  • The top of a staircase

A floor stand at the head of stairs is an obstruction and reads badly from below. An easel leans its board back toward whoever is climbing, which is the direction they are looking.

  • A gallery-style run

Sponsor panels or exhibit boards in a row, one board each, evenly spaced. Count the panels and you have counted the easels — there is no arrangement where two boards share one and look right.

  • A hardwood or polished concrete room

The feet are non-slip rubber that does not mark, which is the row to quote when a venue asks what is going on its floor.

  • Beside a product on display

Holding the specification panel next to the thing it specifies, at a height somebody standing over the product is already reading at.

  • A foyer next to the desk

A welcome board or a programme within reach of the registration queue, so people waiting have something to read that answers what they were about to ask.

When there is no board yet

An easel holds a panel. It does not make one.

An easel is right when a mounted board already exists — a seating chart, a framed credit, something built for the day. When all that exists is artwork to print, the poster stand is the item: a 22 × 28 in sheet loaded from the top of the frame at 60 inches, on one face or two. Nothing to mount and nothing to dry-fit onto foam board.
