Before you order any

What decides whether it works in your room.

Uplighting is a surface effect. It does nothing in the air and everything to whatever it lands on, so the room decides the result far more than the fixture does.

The surface, first

Fabric, plaster, stone and panelling all take colour and show the texture the light rakes across. Glass, mirror and dark polished wood give almost nothing back — there is nothing there to catch.

The colour it is already

Pale walls become the colour you choose. A strongly coloured wall mixes with it instead, so red on deep green is a muddy brown, not red. On a dark wall the honest answer is often white or nothing.

How much house light stays on

This is the one people get wrong. Uplighting reads against a room that has been brought down; leave the ceiling lights at full and it disappears. Ask the venue what its dimming actually does before the day.

Where the wall is

Because there is no cable, the answer is wherever you want. That matters most in a room with every outlet on one side or with a doorway a lead would have to cross.
